For each month's Featured Release, we ask the principle songwriters for the band to provide commentary for each track on the new record. Here, fans are given some insight into the inspiration, creative developement, and recording process for all the songs on the record. Song commentary for this album by Mike. 1. Broken A song about cocaine and sex and the realization that no matter how bad it gets, I'll never be broken again. 2. Today's the Day The most commercial song I've ever written. Very straightforward, about liberating myself from the clutches of a miserable, bloodsucking woman. 3. Push About wanting to be back in high school, when nothing mattered and the world was still small. 4. Something Beautiful About how both myself and my girl have tried our hardest not to destroy every relationship we've ever been in, and how we're trying not to do that now... maybe. 5. California Against New York About my sister leaving town and my heart being broken because of it. 6. Love the Way It Hurts Simple--about getting tattooed. 7. Top of the World A rock n' roll poem. 8. I've Been Listening About my mom and her death and about hoping to hear her voice again, if only for a moment. 9. Fall Down About living and dying in the same moment and juggling that and eating ice cream. 10. Part of Me Believing that you're not as ugly as you've been... that you can change and that we can all be forgiven. |
