E: So Arlington has been steadily making a name for itself as the band continues to record and perform. How much would you say things have sped up over the past year? Ryan: We've only been together for about six months, or a little longer, so things have actually moved really fast. Josh: Yeah, way fast. Ryan: Four months into it, we were in the studio already, and the last two or so have been busy recording. E: How have your individual styles changed as you've been playing? Josh: Um, I learned to play by listening to Metallica and Nirvana in the seventh grade, so for me, a lot. Ryan: Well, the girls'-pants thing rubbed off on me and Josh from Caleb. *Laughs* But musically, I was into a lot of sappy slow emo and stuff, and this band is a lot different than that stuff. I learned on the Nirvana/Smashing Pumpkins stuff, too, and Caleb was all about Third Eye Blind. Landon listened to a bunch of old butt rock. Josh: Landon has always liked Squad 5-0, and that's about it. E: What have you taken from other bands' live shows in developing your own live performance? Ryan: Well, we don't stand onstage like a bunch of stiffs... we are all into hardcore also, and wanted that element in our band. If you saw a video of us with no sound, you would think we were a hardcore band, but the music is more sing-y. Josh: Yeah. E: Would you say that the band's older material is still representative of what it sounds like now? Josh: Some yes and some no. I think we try to keep some of the older stuff up-to-date with the new stuff. We try to revise it to make it fit better with the set. Ryan: When I came into the band, it was just Josh and Caleb, and Caleb wrote a lot of the songs just acoustically, so it was pretty mellow and straightforward. E: What is the rate at which the band composes new songs? Josh: Whenever we get to practice... which is tough sometimes, because Caleb lives on the other side of the state. Ryan: Yeah, we play out so much, and with jobs and such, it's tough to get together and practice as much as we'd like. Josh: But that will all change soon. We'll all live in the same city come August. Ryan: When we all started playing, we were all pretty much an hour apart from every other person in the band. E: What are some major changes you hope will take palce with the band before too long? Josh: Touring all the time. Never coming home. Ryan: And not going to college. But yeah, touring nine or ten months out of the year would be our ultimate goal. And not having to scrap our couch cushions every time we need money for t-shirts or other merch. E: Has there been promise of these changes happening soon? Josh: Um, things are looking a lot better by the day, I'd say. Ryan: Well, the staff at PureVolume has definitely helped us out big time, and we've made a lot of new contacts lately. E: What do you think your music has to offer that will make the public want to listen to it? Josh: It kind of fits between a lot of genres. Ryan: Well, we listen to a lot of stuff that people are into right now, and just kind of blend all of that. Plus a lot of bands that would fit in the same genre as us have live shows that are a little lame, and it's always nice to see something new. E: Well, thanks a lot. Anything else you want to say? Josh: Preorder the CD on smartpunk.com. And thanks. Ryan: Keep checking our website for shows and the preorder stuff on smartpunk. |
