E: Breakdance Vietnam is a band that's been very quietly exploding on the scene, and has recently gotten even more exposure. How did you first find your footing early on at the band's start?
Travis: Our singer Brent is a tattoo artist and made a lot of connections in the beginning, and they played a ton of shows and recorded a solid demo and Kris Roe [of the Ataris] liked it and managed us. After that, we played the Pop Disaster tour with Blink-182 and Green Day and things took off from there. Now we are on Chad and Ian's label from New Found Glory called Broken Sounds. E: Is the band currently as active as ever? Travis: Yeah, we are currently demoing for our new EP and playing all the new jams at live shows. We are going to book something soon and when we get back we are going to record the EP. E: What do you think are the strongest aspects of the music you make? Travis: I don't think its necessarily the music, but our live show. Not that many bands go off to poppy stuff, but we go nuts. I time travel on stage sometimes, and people always get hit in the head with guitars and basses and sh*t. Homer: Or get hit by beer bottles. Travis: Yeah, sometimes we party too much and sh*t gets rowdy but I think thats what people like about us. E: Are you an actively touring band? Homer: Yes, we try to tour as much as we can. Travis: Yeah, we do like week tours a lot. We are booking a full US tour soon. If we take off or something, we will tour full time and go to rehab when we get home. Homer: Rehab is a must. AA meetings are not enough. E: Do you bring a lot with you on the road? Homer: Um, not really--hair spray, ciggs, booze. Travis: Flat iron, cell phone, and cheap beer. I wear the same clothes pretty much every day on tour. When we did Warped Tour it was scum bag central in our van, but now we bought a school bus and it's game over. Homer: Yeah, its yellow and huge and will f*ck your bus up. Travis: Whose bus? I don't think the interviewer has a bus, dude. Homer: I meant like everyone in general--its the whisky talking. E: How have you utilized your connections with other bands when it comes to making and playing music? Travis: Good question--yeah, totally. On our album Jordan from New Found Glory sang on some songs and our friends in The Bled took us out on tour. On our new EP, James from The Bled is going to sing on some tracks. E: So that is Jordan on "Graves of Mistakes"? I had a bet going. Homer: Yeah, thats him. Travis: Well you won, buddy. Yeah, he was cool enough to come down and do that. E: What do you think the ratio of Fun to Work is with Breakdance Vietnam? Homer: Um, well you get to have fun if you put a lil work into it, you know? Travis: We party all the time, but somehow manage to get some good jams going. When we have to work, we get our sh*t done and the results are sweet. But the ratio? Its always 100% fun. Homer: Yeah, for sure. E: I take it touring with you guys is a lot of fun--practical jokes? Travis: Oh yeah, one tour we were on was called the Haters Ball 2004 Tour. Its a nonstop sh*t fest... basically we joke around the whole time and someone always ends up wasted and gets f*cked with. Good times for sure. But what happens on tour stays on tour. E: So how far do you expect to take all this? Travis: Our goal really is just to tour and have new people check out our music. We don't expect money and fame and all that sh*t, just to have a good time and if people take notice, then we are stoked. If not, we can say we tried. E: Well thanks a lot guys, it was fun--anything left you want to say? Travis: Be a creep and add us on Myspace and lurk our page really hard. And go to www.breakdancevietnam.net and www.brokensounds.com. Check out our friends bands too... Elseworth, The Bled, In Ashes We Lie, and Ghost Finger--all on Myspace. Homer: Yeah, and Dont Fear Me Beer Me Tour 2005. |
