Interview with Jason and Stuart August 16th, 2004 |
Kenny Choi - Vocals, Guitar Jason Call - Bass, Keyboard Stuart Clay - Drums, Percussion |
E: So guys, Daphne Loves Derby is a band that has a lot of fun and has been getting a good amount of recognition for it recently... do you think you guys were playing music together for quite a while before anyone started noticing? Or was the wait not that long?
Stuart: Well, we have all played in bands around the area before we joined as Daphne. Jason and I were in a band, and Ken was in another band so we gained a little notoriety from that. Then when we joined, we started out slow but just played as many shows as we could and our band recognition just slowly picked up. Now things are picking up quite fast. It's going better then we ever expected. E: Are you taking this band pretty seriously? Jason: We realize that we are young and that being in a band is a process that has no end. With that, we enjoy everything that comes our way and try not to worry about things that we have no control over. We all put our hearts into the music, but we always have fun. E: Would you say that this day and age is a good time to be in an up-and-coming band? Jason: It is always good to be an up-and coming band, because you need to establish yourself. It may be harder here in Seattle, because it is a major scene for alternative music. It is very competitive, but fierce competition breeds amazing bands. E: Have you been getting any sort of help from other bands that may be considered better established? Stuart: Well, I wouldn't say we received any help from bands that are "established" in the area, but we have a great local scene, and we have a strong bond with many of the local bands around the area, and we all feed off each other. The support within all of the bands is amazing. E: Has the band gotten much of an opportunity to travel and play music? Stuart: We're all attending school as of now, so its difficult to plan out-of-state shows and what not, but we try hard to play as many different venues as possible. We are also in the process of planning a winter tour down the east coast, so hopefully all things will work out. It is hard to say as of now, but we will definitely be playing a lot more out-of-state shows within this next year. E: Have you had time to play shows a lot lately? Jason: We really have not had a lot of time to play shows lately. Man, that last sentence reminded me of those comprehension questions you had to do in elementary school. You would only get full credit if you restated the question in your answer. Okay--we have been working a lot, and have been in the studio, recording. We will start playing a lot more, though. E: Is recording something you guys have done a lot of in the past? Stuart: We love recording. Part of learning a new song that we have written is recording it. We are demoing all the time. E: Does the band generally have shared favorite songs it plays a lot? Jason: I don't think so. I know that my favorite DLD songs change all the time. I really don't have a favorite because they can all feel so different when you play them live. E: Do you ever listen to your own songs for pure enjoyment? Stuart: *Laughs* I don't think I can listen to my own songs for pure enjoyment. It seems like when we listen to our music it's more about finding what we can improve upon and finding what we like. E: What do you think your music has that appeals the most to its fans? Jason: I'm not sure what appeals to people. If I knew, I would try to produce more of it. I am just so surprised with how well people react to our music. My guess is just that they can relate with it. E: Do you think you sound like a lot of other bands available to listen to? Stuart: Yeah, I definitely do. We try to incorporate all of our influences into our music, yet we also try hard to make our sound different from that of any other bands'--our sound is constantly evolving. It is impossible to not to sound like someone else. E: What about being in a band makes it so fun? Jason: I think the coolest thing is meeting so many awesome kind people, and relating to them all through music. Stuart: Well, sometimes I get free pants. E: From Entrust? Stuart: *Laughs* How did you know? I haven't gotten pants yet, but I hope to. E: It's my job. So how did you come about getting the sponsorship from Entrust Clothing? Jason: One day Sean from Entrust asked us if we wanted some shirts, and we said yes. I guess he liked us or something. E: And who wouldn't? Well thanks a lot for doing the interview--anything left you can think of to say? Jason: Thank you! |
