E: E.W.I. is a band that is certainly not new on the scene, but continues to make an impact with its impressive style of music. In what areas do you think the band has stayed consistent since it was started, and where has it seen changes? Rugan: We have always tried to keep our live show as entertaining as it can be. Kind of like KISS. As for changes, our music is evolving but is keeping the same roots we've always had. E: How active has the band been lately? Brandin: Sexually or musically? E: Let's go with musically. Brandin: All right. We have been playing as much as we can. We will be touring this summer, and if all goes well, recording in the fall. Kris: We play every show we can. If there will be kids there to rock out with us, then we'll play. No matter what. E: How much material would you say the band has written compared to other bands with similar lifespans? Is there a standard you've been following in terms of the amount you've composed? Rugan: We write a lot of songs. But we are also really picky, so a lot of them never end up being played live, or recorded. Bryce: We are not really worried about the number of songs that we write. Quality rather than quantity. And they also have to come off well live. E: When and where do many of the ideas for your songs come to you? Rugan: Ideas for songs don't really come at a certain time. I usually just f*ck around and ideas will start to come to me. I'm pretty sure that the rock gods just smile upon me when I'm writing. E: What are the plans for the band's next album? Brandin: I think that we are going to make an EP that makes people remember what rock n' roll is all about. One of our mottos is the "half hour of power." We like to hit them hard and fast. It doesn't matter it if is on a record or at a show. Kris: We are going to go into the studio with a lot of songs and with the intention of cutting a lot of them. That way we all know that we have the best of the best. A really good rock record. E: The band name "E.W.I."--forgive me for asking, but what does it stand for and why did you choose to abbreviate it? Rugan: We actually haven't told anyone what it means. I'm not quite sure why we never told anyone in the beginning, but now that we've started doing that, we can't stop. It's also entertaining to hear what people think it stands for. E: Electric Weasel Igloo? Brandin: Oooh, that's a good one... haven't heard that one yet! E: What sort of experiences have you had with fans? How much of a following does there seem to be for the band's music? Rugan: Sexually or musically? E: This one can be your call. Bryce: Well, from the sixteen to eighteen range we've done pretty well. We've also done really well with the forty-two to fifty-two range. The ladies in those ranges seem to love us. But seriously, talking with fans and meeting with people before and after shows has got to be my favorite part of playing in the band. From crashing at people's houses while on the road, to just hanging out with people after our set, I love meeting new people. Brandin: We have met so many cool people over the years that have helped us out in so many ways. I'm really looking forward to who we get to meet from here on out. Bryce: Our following has been growing steadily with every show that we play. I'd say it's pretty decent in the Puget Sound area, and we also have spots around the country that--when we come through--the shows are huge. E: What are some of the signs that let you know you're making it as a band? Rugan: Bigger shows, better shows, and bigger tours. Brandin: I think it's when people start coming to our shows just because they have heard about our live shows. I also notice how many fan emails we get per day now as opposed to last year. It has been a huge increase. E: And what do you think the band still has left to achieve? Brandin: We would all like to quit our day jobs and be on the road full time. E: What would you say is the single element the band is the proudest of right now? Kris: Our live show. It is what we live for. We are always trying to top our last show. It always ends up with us hurting ourselves and breaking our equipment. But it's all good. It's what we like to do. E: But do you think there's still room to improve on that? Brandin: There is always room. Every night we tell ourselves, "Harder than last night, louder than last night, don't be a pussy." So that keeps us moving forward and improving. E: Well, that's about it. Is there anything left to be said? Brandin: Thanks for having us, it was fun. Kris: Check out our site and come see me live! Rugan: I leave you with this quote from N.W.A.: "Life ain't nothing but bitches and money." Bryce: The end. I win. |
