E: So guys, playing in Echo Screen, were you sure of exactly what kind of music you wanted to play just as the group was forming?
Nick: I don't think any of us really had our minds set on a specific sound when we started this band. As time has progressed, though, we definitely feel like we have grasped a specific sound that we would like to branch off on. Tim: We definitely weren't sure of exactly what kind of music we wanted to play when we first started the band. We all listen to different styles of music and we all have different influences, so I feel that we just play music that we would like. But I think now we have reached our own sound, and we're gonna try to stick with that. E: Were you all friends before the band? Nick: Me and Tim were best friends growing up and we actually previously played in a band with Mike earlier in high school. Tim: And we shared some classes in high school together, so we were all friends. Shaune was older than us, so we really didn't hang out with him as much, but we knew of him through his previous band and we were friendly. Nick: When his band broke up and he was looking for a new band to fool around with, he agreed and we started to form. Tim: It wasn't until our bands broke up that we decided that we wanted to try to take this to the next level. E: Do songs usually start with one person? Or several? Tim: Well, we've made up some songs from scratch, but the songs usually start with Shaune bringing an idea to the table. Nick: Like a chord progression or lyrics. Tim: Then each of us throws out our feelings and ideas...and we all make up our musical parts. E: Would you say your most recent music blows your older stuff out of the water? Tim: Yes, definitely. Nick: I would definitely say that. I think every band will have fans that love the old stuff more, just because the first songs really make your band - your band. But I can definitely say that every song on our new album is tighter with better lyrics and stronger musical parts. Tim: Sometimes I go back and listen to our first recording and hear so many things that I would like to change or do over. I feel that we have a pretty distinct style now with the way we're going with our music, and all of our new songs are a lot better than the old ones. E: What is there to get excited about that's happening with the band in the neat future? Tim: Well, we've actually had some label attention lately, and that's very exciting for us. We also recorded a new EP and we're in the process of getting it mastered. It should be coming out in February, so that's very exciting for us as well. Nick: It will be our first release as a band, and the touring to follow it. We've never actually gotten out on the road and played in the midwest or west coast so that is something that I am personally excited about. E: How much has gone into this release? Nick: A lot! We first started recording in the summer 2004 and just finished this December. It's not that it took us that long, but money played the most important factor. Tim: We've definitely put the most time, energy, and money into this release, and we want it to be our best. We haven't sold any of our past EPs, but we're starting with this one... it's gonna have great songs, great artwork...its gonna be well worth it. Nick: We decided to get our tracks mastered by Alan Douches, who does amazing work and it should be ready for distribution by the end of February 2005! We're so excited! E: What can you tell me about the upcoming Drive-Thru compilation CD? Tim: I actually don't know that much about it... all I know is that our song "Rushmore" is going to be on it, and that it's going to feature a ton of great bands, both signed and unsigned. Nick: We were lucky enough to be called up by Richard from Drive Thru and he wanted to use "Rushmore,"--from our upcoming EP "An American Tale"--for the Drive-Thru/PureVolume Comp which will be called "Bands You Love, Have Heard Of, And Should Know," which will be released on February 8, 2005. Tim: I think it's a great idea to get some of the unsigned bands who have great music out there for everyone to listen to. E: Are you planning on definitely riding this band as far as it will go? Tim: Definitely. We're prepared to do everything it takes to make it with this band... we love doing it and we're just hoping for the best. Nick: There's no question in all of our minds that we will take this band as far as it can go! E: Well good luck, and thanks a whole lot for interviewing. Tim: No problem, man. Thank you! Nick: Thank you for the oppertunity, and make sure to pick up our debut release "An American Tale" in stores February 2005!. |
