E: So as Ember Sky works to establish itself among fans of the scene, what traits do you think the band possesses that are most worthy of being showcased to the public?
Spencer: I really think our stage presence is what attracts people to see us--no matter who's watching us or how many people we're playing in front of, we'll rock out like no other. We put every emotion into creating these songs, and it really reflects while we're playing.
E: How similar is the way you perform a song live to the way you record it onto an album?
Spencer: Well, we try not to put in anything that we can't perform live, so that when we do play, fans aren't dissatisfied. But we can definitely play everything we record exactly the same live.
E: Why do you think live shows are still such a draw even when fans can already listen to the songs on a record?
Spencer: Any band could come in a record studio and sit there for hours with a producer and record the perfect CD. But actually going to the show and watching the band pumping up the crowd and getting the crowd to sing their hearts out along with the band to the same music really separates a live show from a record.
E: What sort of support has the band been seeing?
Spencer: Our band has been getting lots of support from the local venue, some of which has guided us to where we are now--other bands that have open spots in their line ups, to our friends and fans that come out to every single one of our shows, and even our families who let us practice at our houses and support us when we want to travel. And our sponsor Threadbare, which helps publicize us.
E: What has the band achieved so far that you believe to be most noteworthy?
Spencer: Personally, I think hearing that we brought fans to out last few shows that we didin't know--I think that has been a goal since we were in middle school. Not a friend that we bugged to go to our show Friday night, but some random person that appreciated our music and payed eight dollars to go support us. And playing with Matchbook Romance and Maxeen.
E: What are the band's aspirations?
Spencer: I think our main goal is to have fun at each show, and if it takes us somewhere, then so be it. Being on the Militia Group is something that we are striving for and will hopefully be on in a few years.
E: What motivates you to keep going as a band?
Spencer: People keep complimenting our shows and CDs, as well as all the work and time we've put into creating what we have. We've gone this far, why stop now? Plus, the adrenaline rush of standing in front of hundreds of people waiting to listen to you.
E: We all know that everyday life and nature inspires the lyrical content of a song, but can it inspire musical aspects as well?
Spencer: Yes, the notes you play can totally chnage the way a certain expression is conveyed musically. The notes are what set the mood of the song.
E: Does the band ever set specific goals--to achieve this by this time? Or do you just let it flow?
Spencer: I don't think we have any specific goals--we pretty much just go with the flow. But, like, we would like to be playing Warped Tour in 2005 and just keep progressing musically.
E: Do you set yourselves up to follow the patterns and habits of other bands that came before you?
Spencer: Watching bands such as Noise Ratchet and Acceptance explode into the music scene after signing to The Militia Group, that is kind of where we want to go in terms of following other bands. Other than that, we try to do our own thing and not let other bands influence us too much.
E: What sort of knowledge have you attained through being in a band?
Spencer: Knowing people is everything, and if you help other bands out, most likely they will return the favor, so it is good to be very courteous and respectful towards people in the music scene.
E: Well, thanks for doing the interview, and good luck.
Spencer: Thank you.
