E: Rory deals out a healthy dose of rock-and-roll in its music, writing some of the most aggressively catchy stuff out there today do you think the songwriting process for the music you create is noticeably different from the process for other genres or styles of music?
Marc: The songwriting process is something that would cause most mortals minds to implode with the amount of backwardness and impulsiveness and blatant disregard for our own and our listeners sanities. It is quite simply the most frustrating and most gratifying task that any of us have undertaken--and we do so on a regular basis. Its quite indescribable Im surprised that Ive managed to say that much. E: How do you think your band strays from what could be called the typicality that befalls most of the generic music scene today? Marc: I think that a lot of it is the very process of creation. Mostly in the song production, but also the creation of the five members chemistry and our actions and reactions and behaviors; the creation of our image (which is absolutely unavoidable--every band creates their own image, whether they care to admit it or not). It comes down to the fact that we dont take time to compare ourselves to anyone else--theres a definite satisfaction from knowing that were unconditionally doing our own thing on our own ignorant terms. E: Does the band work toward faraway goals? Or do you keep your ambitions fairly close to where youre at, taking it one achievement at a time? Marc: That question varies from person to person in the band. Some of us are older than others, some of us have sacrificed more than others, and were all completely different people when it comes to the way we live our lives. I know that there has to be a common goal of something that can only be achieved by persistency, but I dont think any of us really know what that is probably just progression and happiness from the platform of music. E: How well-scheduled is the bands time? Do you generally always know what youre going to do next, when, and how? Or is there ever a degree of spontaneity in your career? Marc: There is hardly ever a time of well-plannedness. Were way too spontaneous to even get things done a lot of the time. The only thing we ever know is what state and country well be in the next day. E: Besides simply producing the best music you can, are there other ways the band has to present itself in order to draw fans? Marc: I dont know if it attracts or repels people, but we, if I do say so myself, are the most sincere people anyone may ever meet. What you see is what you get has never been truer than around the five of us. Were pretty much the most fun and awesome people ever to exist were cooler than robots. E: Is Rory the kind of band where the meaning behind each song is important enough that not knowing it greatly lessens the listening experience? Marc: Not at all. Knowing it would probably lessen the listening experience--I mean, not that we have one, but what if a song was actually about a day that one of us ate a really good sandwich? To the listener, thatd suck. But, to us, it may have been a life-changing turkey sandwich--and the only way we could think to try to convey that is through the music, not a story. E: Once the band has produced a record, gone on tour, filmed a video, and the other typical experiences, do you think it all becomes fairly routine? Or do you still find tasks that are completely new to you? Marc: Everything we do is new to me. The second I start taking things like that for granted, Ill have to really stand back and reflect on why I am even participating in it anymore. Every time we even go to practice and write a new song, its exciting for us, every time we play an out-of-town show were thrilled and cant wait to get there. For now, everything that happens is still new and fun and far from routine. E: Do any members of the band have ties to other areas of the industry besides being in a band? Do you think this is something that could be done with enthusiasm and ease if you ever decided to stop playing, or would you consider other areas of employment? Marc: We all have other interests and skills, but somehow they can all be traced back to the industry. Jeremy is very into art and design; I definitely take part in design, as well as immense interest in entertainment business; Chris is an amazing musician who will be an amazing musician until the day he dies; Jordan would absolutely love to start a record label; and Joel would make a great manager, whether on the musicians side, or a labels side. E: Have you seen a lot of fan loyalty for the group? Marc: Definitely. The people we have coming to our shows are the same people we had coming to our shows when it was just three of us playing covers in a subdivision clubhouse. I think people see our sincerity and gratitude and loyalty to our fans, and respond the same way. Theres really nothing else Id rather accomplish from here on out, other than to let any one who has ever come to a show, bought our CD, or given us a listen online know that they are absolutely amazing people for what theyve given us. E: What do you think is the number one thing youre thankful for, collectively as a group? Marc: Two things--I cant nail it down to one. Like I just mentioned--everyone who has every given us so much as a listen, not to mention the people who come to shows, the people who purchase stuff, the people who let us sleep on their floors are the most amazing people in the world. Theyre enabling us to go through and accomplish whatever it is that weve set out to accomplish and making it more than worth it. There is nothing we are more thankful for than all of those people. Secondly, I think we all are thankful for the patience that everyone has, within the band and outside of it. We all neglect our friends outside the band on a regular basis for the band, and vice-versa. We procrastinate a lot and without patience, wed probably not have those loyal fans. Also, were thankful for energy drinks. Yum. E: Thanks a lot! Marc: No! Thank you a lot! Kind ladies and gentlemen. |
