E: Dave, Rydia has a musical sound that is ready to take thousands of fans captive... how much exposure would you say the band has gotten so far? Dave: I would say we've gotten a good amount of exposure so far. We've done festivals--like The Vans Warped Tour--and played with some really awesome bands, like Senses Fail, Copeland, Madison... so we've been really lucky to play some awesome shows. E: Do you get to play shows as often as you'd like? Dave: If we had it our way, we'd play every day for as long as we can. Most of us are still in school right now, but we try to play six to eight shows a month, mainly around the New Jersey/New York/Pennsylvania area. We'd like to play a lot more right now since we're all off, but we've been in the studio for about two months now, writing and demoing for our upcoming full length. But we're going to get back in that groove! E: Would you say that the work for the new record has been going quickly? Dave: It's actually been moving along really smoothly. We started in mid May, and we wrote about... fourteen new songs so far. We have our own studio, so it's nice to hear how a song is coming along when everything is put together. We usually end up tearing apart a song once we finish it, and put it back together with some new ideas and what not. E: In what ways would you say the songs on the album are all connected? Dave: Good question. Well, going back to our first EP, we experimented a lot with some different elements of rock and punk. I would say that, so far, we've been writing more rock'n'roll type songs, but in a new fresh and fun way. A bunch of the songs we have done so far are very guitar driven and in your face. I would compare some of our new songs to Jimmy Eat World meets Goo Goo Dolls with some rock on top. We're not really trying to write a record with an emphasis on one style or sound... we're just having fun and writing some good ol' rock songs. E: Do you think that Rydia has a sound unique from other bands? How important is standing out in the crowd to a band's career? Dave: I hope we're making songs that sound different! After shows, people will tell us that we sound like this band or that band, but we love that kind of stuff. Some kids will tell us that we sound like the Gin Blossoms or like Incubus... It's just cool to know that we sound differerent through everyone's ears. I think it's really important for a band to stand out during their career, because not only does it add something different for people to listen to, but it allows musicians to play and write what they want to play, rather than playing something just becuase other musicians do it. E: When you're writing a song, do you draw from specific influences for that song? Dave: I guess we all do no matter what. We all grew up listening to the same music, so we all think alike as far as the direction of a song. But what makes our song writing process fun and creative is that we all expanded our interest in music, so we each throw in our own two cents as far as how each member thinks the song should go. E: Do specific members usually have a larger part in the songwriting process? Or is it relatively even? Dave: Charlie and I usually do most of the writing for Rydia, but we usually write something and show it to the other guys and get some feedback. We record pretty much any new songs that we have in mind, and we'll just tear it apart and piece it back together as a band until we think it sounds solid. But in the end, we're all throwing in our own ideas, so everyone plays a key part. E: Is it easier or harder, would you say, to write a song with more members in your band as opposed to fewer members? Dave: I definitely find it a lot easier with fewer members. It's less of a distraction and easier to stay focused. It's a lot easier to listen to one voice than listening to five different voices. E: How similar or unique are all the voices involved in the songwriting process for Rydia? Dave: We all have similar views on songs and how we think the song should go. We agree on a lot of stuff, and we all know when something just doesn't sound right. I've been writing with Charlie for over seven years now, so we're always on the same page. It's just nice to be able to jam with a group of guys who respect each other and not feel intimidated to throw something on the table. E: How would you describe the type of song the band typically writes? Dave: I guess I would describe it as rockin'. We know it's a song we can use if we want to play it again and again after we finish writing it. E: Do you expect the style of your songs to change in the future? Dave: I can't imagine it staying the same, but I'm sure it will sound similar to a certain degree. I think the more and more we write together, tour and play with all these amazing bands, we'll all be motivated and eager to try something new. We all hear about different bands every day and fall in love with them, and each of these bands demonstrate a different way to write music. Every band we play with influences us and inspires us to try something new. E: Would you say that the years to come for the band look bright? Dave: I think it's looking pretty good for us! We've been writing a lot lately, and trying to write a record that we're proud of and want the world to hear. We're looking to tour until we go bald, and write some kick ass records. We've been getting a ton of support lately, and we just want to thank everyone who has been coming out to our shows and hanging out with us. Our next record will be out late spring/early summer of 2005 and we have some big plays for it! As long as we love what we're doing, we'll be hoping to leave our own dent in the music world. E: Well, we certainly enjoy hearing what you do. Thanks for interviewing. Dave: Rock'n'roll! |
