E: Blue Ink Rebellion has been accumulating an admirable collection of songs that has been well-taken by the members of the music community. How serious are you treating the idea of this band becoming your sole lifestyle?
Zach: I mean... if it happens, that would be tight. Sly: When it comes right down to it, it's really about making music that you love and having fun. So yeah, I'd totally love having that be my life--and having people like it, well that's just a plus to all of the fun. E: Have you been treating the possibility of a career in music with more optimism as the band's continued from its start? Brian: Well, I think in the beginning, we didn't take it so seriously. After playing a bunch of shows and making new songs, we really became more enthusiastic about music and the idea of making this a career started to seem more of a possibility. Alan: With me, with regard to a career in music, it's pretty much been a sense of apathy and the apathy just keeps growing. I just like playing music. Dennis: Music's always been a huge part of my life, so to have this as a career would be a dream, especially playing alongside four of my best friends. Zach: Maybe a tiny bit. E: Are there any strategies or music-making theories you've vowed to stick by as an active band? Sly: Not really. Alan: I think we just pretty much do whatever the fuck we want. Brian: Ditto. Zach: I just want to like what we play. Dennis: I took music theory, but the band never understands me. Alan: Dennis is a dick. E: Do you think that an aggressively active live show tradition is crucial to the band being successful? Zach: Hell yeah! After I saw The Early November, I really wanted to get into it. Sly: *Laughs* I think we all try to rock out as much as we can to hide how many times we mess up. Dennis: I wouldn't want to watch a band just play their instruments--they need to put on a show, gosh darnit! E: Is songwriting a consistently occurring process, or are there certain times reserved for doing most of the composition? Sly: We're always playing around in Alan's basement, so usually a song just comes along. Alan: It's a lot easier when you're depressed. Sly: That's why Alan sucks at writing songs. E: Having you been looking to do something different with your next release? Brian: I like taking our new songs as being somewhat of an answer to our older songs. We started with songs that were structurally similar and tried to change that up with our last CDs. The newer songs were more musically-based and were in the vein we're trying to go in. I'm expecting our new songs to be a little edgier but to have the same style as our last. Zach: I don't think "looking." It just happens with different influences. E: How seriously do you take the band's general talent? Do you make an effort to be modest, or do you recognize where your strengths are? Alan: It's hard to take the band's general talent seriously when we don't have any. Zach: Brian needs to work on his rhythm. Brian: I've got rhythm, fool! Dennis: Personally, I think I'm not that great, but my mom says I'm awesome. Zach: ...Did Brian say "fool"? Brian: I can say "fool" whenever I want! E: That should about do it--thanks a lot. Anything left you want to add? Sly: Basically, we try not to take ourselves too seriously and just have fun with the band. I'm just glad that it's actually working out. Brian: You suck, Sly. I quit. Alan: Holler on the dollar. Zach: Our band restaurant is Bennigan's! The chicken fingers are amazing. |
