Interview with Jake and Andrew August 28th, 2003 |
E: Despite the fact that The Silent Attack could still be called a "young" band, you've definitely made your trip around the block. In what ways do you think you've matured as musicians? Andrew: Well, if you heard our first song, you'd know. Jake: *Laughs* I think we've always been pretty mature in that we have always been really serious about our band. Andrew: Yeah, I agree. Jake: We started playing cover songs to get tight with each other. And then when we started writing... we just let it flow. Andrew: And then we tried way too hard to write our first song, and when it came out... I don't know. It was pop-punk, then went to this out-of-key metal chorus and bridge. It's pretty funny now, looking back on it. Jake: Ohh, it was bad. Andrew: *Laughs* Jake: But back then, we were serious about that song. Like... as bad as it was, it meant a lot to us. Andrew: True. Jake: So we just kind of kept writing and writing, and each one was better than the last. Andrew: Yeah. E: When you write a song, do you sit down, say, "Okay, let's write a song," and do it? Jake: There's no formula. Andrew: Our songwriting process is like no other. I'll write songs, and Jake will, too. Then I'll give him mine, and he'll rip them apart and take out the things that he likes. It then turns into this... hybrid song of both our styles in writing. Jake: Basically, a song starts out with me and Andrew sitting at my house, eating ice cream, and constantly practicing the same guitar over and over again. And that's no joke. Andrew: Yeah. E: Do you need inspiration for your songs? For instance, "Pen Paper Revenge"--was there actually some girl you were fuming over as you wrote that song? Jake: *Laughs* Um... Andrew: That's funny, actually, because Jake had written music and showed it to me, and asked if I had any idea for words. And we sat down and wrote those words. Jake: Kind of like what Andrew said, in that song he wrote the verses and most of the chorus, and then I had these ideas for a bridge, and it all just kind of came together. But, yeah--like a hybrid. Andrew: All those [songs] come from random girls, but they are true stories. Jake: No names, of course... *ahem*DONNA*ahem* Sorry, had a cough. Andrew: Yeah, we'll protect the names of the semi-innocent... *ahem*MARY*ahem*... *ahem*LAUREN*ahem* Sorry. I had a cough, too. Jake: *Laughs* E: Correct me if I'm wrong--and I know I'm not, because we fact-check like crazy before asking these questions--but you currently hold the leading spot for the Campbell Gaslighter's biggest crowd-drawer with 95 people. How is it you've achieved a following like that? Jake: We promoted like crazy for that show... it was intense. Andrew: Yeah. Jake: Made a bunch of flyers... I got my yearbook out and made a list of everyone who might possibly go, then called them, along with my whole family. Rhyan and Andrew did the same. Andrew: True dat. Jake: And we went "flying" with our friend Wesley at the mall. E: What have you recorded? Andrew: We have a two-song demo, recorded in Jake's living room. Jake: My dad is a recording genius. E: Where could someone interested find a recording? Jake: They could get a hold of us and we could send them a demo, if we still have them. E: From your site we learn that TSA has gone through a series of other band names. Jake: *Laughs* Ohhh yeah. We seriously hated choosing for so long. Andrew: For sure. Jake: That was the hardest part of the band. Andrew: That and "Play some Blink!!!" Jake: Oh yeah. Finally we had to put our foot down and say... no. We don't know how to play "All The Small Things." Andrew: It saved our lives. Jake: Some of the other band names were stupid. Some we liked, though... Andrew: Oh no! Not the list! Jake: For a long time we were known as "Famous Last Words." But this folk band had it and threatened to sue us. Andrew: Yeah, man. It was some sketchy business. Jake: For real. And I'd say another part that was terrible was the suggestions from people for a band name. Andrew: *Laughs* Jake: "Spare Change." Andrew: *Laughs harder* Jake: There were a bunch more. For a while we were known as "The Eleventh Hour," which was my favorite besides "The Silent Attack". But another band had that name, too. Andrew: And one of the first suggestions was from our merch girl's sister... "A Black Winter"! E: All right, I have to ask this--favorite Led Zeppelin song, each of you. Andrew: Hmm... Jake: "Immigrant Song," definitely. Andrew: "Black Dog." Because Jake used to play it to impress older people listening to him play the guitar. Jake: *Laughs* Yeah. That's my go-to-40-year-old-and-impress-them song. E: Do you see the band still going in two years? Jake: For sure. Andrew: Without a doubt. We have put so much into this, and it means the world to us. Jake: We're not stopping 'til we rip it up all over the world. And even then we're not stopping. Andrew: Amen. Jake: So I would say... definitely. Andrew: Jacob and I would look at each other whenever something musical was going rad, and say, "Starting a band was the best idea we've ever had." E: What's on TSA's schedule? Jake: Tonight we're sound-checking to play on T.V.! We're so stoked. Andrew: Grand Fanali show on Saturday at the LG Outhouse, with The Stereo, The Plus Ones, and Locale AM. E: Great line-up. Andrew: I agree. And what next after that, Jake? World domination? Jake: Of course. E: Well, best of luck to you and the band. Andrew: Thanks so much. E: Thanks a lot for answering the questions. Andrew: Thanks for asking them. Peace, Love, and Unity. And God Bless. |
